Home Repair Tips for Homeowners
from:Most homeowners can do a variety of home repair and maintenance jobs but there are times when even the most skillful do-it-yourselfer has to call in a professional. This is when you have to stand back and let a skilled professional handle something that, although you may want to do yourself, you may not have the proper tools or have the expert knowledge that is called for. It is better to let professionals handle certain jobs that require skills that the average person just does not have.
When you do have to hire a professional, do your homework and get someone that is reputable. Put everything in writing and leave nothing to chance. If you are hiring someone for a major job, try to get two or three estimates before you hire someone.
One of the biggest challenges homeowners face when it comes to home repair and maintenance is that it is expensive. However, it’s even more expensive to make repairs than it is to maintain the household systems so it is important to do so on a regular basis. One idea that many homeowners use is to set aside a certain amount of money each month as part of their regular budget. This money is used to pay for service calls, supplies, and repairs as they are needed. Planning ahead for home maintenance and repair can help ensure costly repairs don’t put a dent in your budget.
Simple preventive practices, like using something to catch the hair in the drain can prevent costly repairs down the road. These are good for the bathroom sink and shower/bathtub but if you can’t find one that fits your drain you can easily make one to fit.
Another easy to avoid repair is using the garbage disposal properly. It’s amazing what some people think the garbage disposal can digest but a good rule of thumb is that if you can’t eat it, the garbage disposal can’t either. Also, be sure and run water when using the disposal and if it sounds funny, investigate immediately. Also, use a plug when the disposal is not in use so that utensils and other small things don’t fall down the disposal.
Carpeting can be another expensive replacement item, although it is relatively easy to maintain so be proactive and use plenty of throw rugs and clean spills up immediately. You should vacuum at least once a week and consider having the carpeting professionally cleaned once a year. You might also opt to buy your own shampooer so that you can do-it-yourself, which will save you a ton of money. You can get a decent model for $200 and shampoo the carpet more frequently, especially when there are spills. By being proactive and taking care of things as they are needed, you will ensure that the value of your home goes up and you will enjoy living in a nice and clean and healthy home.
