Tips for Calling in a Home Repair Service
from:From time to time you may find it necessary to call in a professional home repair service person to make repairs on your home. Perhaps you could it yourself only you don’t have the time or maybe a particular home repair is beyond the scope of your expertise. In any event, there are times when it just can’t be avoided and you might as well make the best of it. Here are some tips to help you do just that.
Check references if you are dealing with an unknown person or company. Ask friends, neighbors, and coworkers for recommendations for service personnel they have dealt with. If you are considering hiring a company, check to see if they have a rating at the Better Business Bureau. Even if they aren’t a member of the BBB, if complaints have been filed against them, you will be able to see the nature of those complaints and this could be a heads up to keep looking.
Once you find the professional who will render the repair services, make sure you are on the same page as to the scope and price of the job you are having done. If the job involves someone who holds a license, such as a plumber or electrician, check to make sure that their license is valid and up to date also.
Don’t pay for work that you are not satisfied with. Never, ever pay for the whole job upfront. While you may be required to put down a deposit or pay for a fraction of the job, withhold full payment until you have inspected the repair job and are satisfied.
If you are dealing with a large company that gives you a window, such as between 10 am and noon that they will show up, hold them to their promise. Many companies offer a guarantee of some sort when they operate like this. They realize that your time is valuable too and so they will offer a discount if their service personnel don’t show up on time. Even if they don’t offer such a guarantee, it won’t hurt to ask for a discount if the person is late.
Other than that, relax! If you’ve had to take time off from work to stay home while a repair is being made, use that time to do something you never have time to do. Watch television, clean out your spice cabinet, or make other repairs while the service person is working. Above all, don’t fret the whole time the repair is being made because you are chained to the house. Use the time wisely, even if that means putting your feet up and taking some time off.
