15. ANTIQUE DOORS
from:ANTIQUE DOORKNOBS
Surprisingly, there was a time when homeowners couldn't wait to trade their flower buttons for faceless finishes smooth with nickel, copper and brass. Faces were etched in glass, and they would cast off the old doorknobs and spend it – along with thousands of other old doorknobs – off into garbage dumps of cities all over the world.
If only we had known then what we know now? Today, antique doorknobs are all the rage in designer homes. New finishes flowering most of the houses, built to carry the crown, wainscoting and six-panelled doors pray for the more intimate relation of antique doorknobs.
While the originals antique doorknobs can now command hundreds of dollars on the open market, many hardware manufacturers have jumped into the market. They now offer beautiful reproductions of antique doorknobs, as well as new designs that are virtually guaranteed to catch the eye of homeowners who want historically accurate hardware for their homes.
The new manufacturers help to make copies of antique doorknobs, much more accessible for those who want to make that sort of equipment part of their home decor. Not only can you find copies of classic styles, but there are also a wide assortment of other items, ranging from covers for keyhole, turns of the thumb keys, and skeletal stops.
How about strikers? Why replace those you say? Well, nothing destroys the illusion of something being an old classic than when something glaringly modern lies just beyond the edge. If you go about adding the right doorknobs to an antique door, there’s no sense in having a lock on a modern door jam. With this recognition, the designers have already thought this through, and most of the antique doorknobs have stops that will work with almost any door, even those towers with a lock and thumb.
