Popcorn Ceilings: The Most Hated Ceilings in the World!

from:

They call them popcorn ceilings. Some people have accurately noted that they look less like a plate of popcorn than a tray of cottage cheese. You know the ceilings we’re talking about, right? They feature a bumpy, sprayed on texture. They were a ceiling finishing norm for decades. Today, however, they’re probably the most hated type of ceiling in the world.

These ceilings seem to offend the aesthetic sensibilities of just about everyone. We’re at the point where anyone who’s thinking about selling a home needs to plan on stripping down the popcorn texturing and re-doing their ceilings in order to get maximum value for their real estate. People simply hate these ceilings.

So, if they’re so universally despised, you mint be wondering why they’re so ubiquitous. Why do so many homes feature these less-appreciated ceilings?

The answer has very little to do with changing notions of aesthetics. Popcorn ceilings weren’t de riguer elements of design due to their stunning beauty. Part of their appeal stemmed from their simplicity. Even an inexperienced individual could spray on a popcorn ceiling quickly and easily. Another reason for their omnipresence was the fact that they do a great job of covering underlying flaws. If you’re underlying ceiling wasn’t perfect, a quick popcorn application could mask your problems.

Apparently, that functionality kept the popcorn ceiling common for years and years. At some point, though, it’s obvious that people tired off the look. Today, it’s constantly criticized in design and remodeling circles. No one with an interest in improving a residence’s home value is applying new popcorn ceilings. The only place you still see them, it seems, is in apartment complexes.

Part of the reason for the negative attitudes toward popcorn ceilings is purely a matter of aesthetics. While the ceilings may trend slightly toward “neutral” under some rare circumstances, most people don’t like the random lumpiness of popcorn. That sense continues to grow as more and more people discover the various ways in which a great ceiling design can really improve the look of a room.

Popcorn ceilings can also be a little hard to maintain. Cleaning is a real aggravation. All of those nooks and crannies can become magnets for dust and cobwebs. Those little peaks and valleys make it harder to clear out those aggravations, too.

Finally, many older popcorn ceilings contain asbestos. If it wasn’t bad enough that they’re a little on the unattractive side, they can also be unhealthy. No one likes the idea of having a ceiling of carcinogenic ugliness hanging over one’s head all day and night!

One thing is becoming increasingly clear these days. The age of the popcorn ceiling has, most certainly, reached its end. We’re ready to start exploring great ceiling design options instead of spending our time under ceilings that look a lot like plate of cottage cheese. Finally.
